Sparkle is made from a velvet painting that my father bought somewhere on his return journey from Vietnam in the late 1960s. It was a gift for my grandmother, who gave it to my mother when my parents married. When my parents separated in 1977, my mother threw out everything that reminded her of my father, and I rescued the painting from the garbage and kept it until 2001, when I decided to recycle it into a doll form.
I tried several times to bead her, without much success. In January 2003, I decided to send her away to be embellished by others. I carefully scraped the remaining paint off of her, and then sponged on artist acrylics. I beaded her face, made her a journal, and sent her on her way.
Unfortunately, only 2 out of the other 5 round robin participants bothered to embellish on her, so when she come home in September 2003 she still needed more work. I did most of the beading on her torso at that time, and while I'm still not sure that she's finished, I am at least happy enough to display her.
Thanks so much to Kirsten Perry for Sparkle's jewelry and tiara, and to Stefani Kelley for her hair!
Sparkle is 8 inches tall.
